Understanding the Role of Sugar in the Body

Although too much sugar can be harmful, it is essential for providing energy to the body. Glucose, fructose, and sucrose are types of sugars that can be found in natural foods like dairy products, fruit, and vegetables, as well as added to processed foods, desserts, and drinks. Carbohydrates, which break down into glucose, are the primary fuel for your body.

Does Sugar Cause Cancer?

The link between cancer and sugar has been widely debated for many years. Although cancer cells consume more glucose than other cells, it doesn’t mean that sugar intake directly causes cancer to develop or spread.

However, consuming sugar from refined sources like sweetened drinks and processed foods can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. These conditions are associated with an increased risk of cancer, largely due to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance.

Insulin Resistance Puts You at Higher Risk for Cancer

Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels by enabling glucose to enter cells. Consuming too much sugar over time can make the body resistant to it, which causes the pancreas to produce more insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.  Insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes and obesity, which have been linked to an increased risk of breast, pancreatic, kidney, liver, and colorectal cancer, among others.

High insulin levels may also encourage cell growth and inhibit apoptosis (cell death). This can create an environment where cancer cells thrive. Insulin resistance may also lead to increased production of growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a protein that has been associated with the progression of cancer.

How Sugar Affects Inflammation in the Body

Chronic inflammation is another key factor that impacts the sugar and cancer link. A diet high in refined sugars can cause levels of inflammatory markers in the body to rise. Chronic inflammation has been known to damage cells and encourage cell mutation, which can create an environment that’s conducive to cancer growth.

Chronic inflammation can also impede your immune system’s ability to detect and destroy cancer cells, which can contribute to the development and progression of various types of cancer over time. In addition to cutting down on refined sugars, IV therapies such as glutathione therapy may help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.

The Role of Obesity in Sugar and Cancer Risk

Obesity is a well-known risk factor for many types of cancer. Excessive sugar consumption increases overall calorie intake, which can lead to weight gain and accumulation of visceral fat.

Visceral fat is stored around the organs and may release inflammatory molecules and hormones that interrupt normal cellular function. This can increase the risk of tumor formation. If someone suffers from chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and obesity, it can create a metabolic environment that’s conducive to the acceleration of cancer growth.

Cutting Down on Sugar Can Lower Cancer Risk

Although it’s impossible to completely cut all sugars from your diet, eating less added sugar can significantly reduce the risk of cancer, inflammation, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

Instead of consuming fruit juices and processed foods, opt for whole fruits, vegetables, and grains high in fiber. Combining carbohydrates with protein and healthy fats like those found in olive oil or avocado can also slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and prevent insulin levels from spiking. Sodas, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee and tea contain loads of added sugar. Replacing them with water, sparkling soda water, and herbal teas can significantly reduce your sugar intake.

Reading labels on the foods you buy can help you become more aware of the added sugars they contain. Stay away from foods and drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup and make sure cane sugar and dextrose aren’t high on the list of ingredients.

Making these small changes over time can make a huge difference. Our experienced integrative medicine providers can advise you on diet and lifestyle changes and recommend other treatments that may help decrease cancer risk and get you on the path to optimal health.
